A few tips for moving in together

Moving in together is an exciting time for many couples but it can also be a bit taxing if you don’t have a plan. Whether you’re moving into a brand new home together or one of you is moving in with the other, there are lots of potentially problematic decisions to make.

Make a plan

Discuss the logistics of the move, measure the spaces, work out what will and won’t fit in the room. It’s also a good idea to work out what you’ll keep and what you’ll get rid of in the move.

Have a clear out!

As we mentioned in an earlier blog (Our top 10 tips for moving house), it’s a great opportunity to have a clear out. Don’t hesitate to get rid of things that you haven’t used, even better, sell them and use the money to buy a takeaway on your first night or something new for the flat that you choose together.

Be sensible with duplicates

Although it can be tempting to get rid of all duplicates when you’re moving in with someone, some items can be handy to keep around. If you move into a bigger place further down the line, keeping spare furniture and mattresses etc. can be a good idea and save money. Also, although neither of you want to think about the relationship ending…it’s much easier to divide your belongings if you’ve both kept the bulk of your own.

Of course, every couple is unique and approach moving in together differently but hopefully with a bit of forward-thinking, it will go smoothly and you can focus on enjoying this next chapter together.
